Announcing New Secure Web Gateway (SWG) Hardware, SWG Enterprise Licensing, and S-Series EOS/EOL

Symantec is announcing a new paradigm for Secure Web Gateway hardware appliances, decoupling the traditional hardware appliance into separate hardware and software, through the introduction of the new Symantec hardware platform (SSP) and enterprise licensing (ISG). The new SWG hardware platform will be available for order Aug 3, 2020, along with new deployment and licensing options for Symantec ProxySG. The new SSP-S410 series of appliances replaces the SG, SRP, and ARP product editions of the S200/S400/S500 appliances and is a new multi-function hardware platform for Symantec SWG Proxy and Reverse Proxy/WAF, and future applications. New ISG enterprise licensing allows customers to purchase hardware and software separately for greater deployment flexibility, scalability and cost savings. Additional applications, such as Content Analysis, Management Center and future SWG components, will be available for deployment on the SSP-S410 appliances later this year.

In conjunction with the new offerings, an End of Sale and End of Life notification has been issued for the S200/S400/S500 Proxy, MACH5, Standard Reverse Proxy, and Advanced Reverse Proxy hardware appliances. More information on Symantec EOS/EOL policy.

What does the new hardware offer?

Compared to the previous S-series appliances, this new hardware platform offers significant performance improvements, deployment flexibility, greater scalability and cost savings. It separates the hardware purchase from the software purchase, which enables the adoption of new Enterprise licensing so you can choose how to deploy the solution – on-premises, as a virtual appliance, or in the cloud. The new hardware provides:

  • Separation of Hardware and Software – This separation enables enhancements to be adopted more quickly.
  • Flexible licensing and portability – Purchase an Enterprise License (annual subscription to software) and deploy your proxy solution on-premises, as a virtual appliance, or in the cloud.
  • Easier scalability – Deploy anywhere in your organization and expand or contract your deployment as needed, without having to change licenses.
  • Simplified configurations – Ten previous hardware appliance models, multiplied by three different product editions (SG, ARP, SRP) for a total of 30 different product models, are now consolidated down to just four HW platforms with plenty of headroom for future growth, without the need for upgrade kits.
  • Hardware consolidation and improved performance – With the highest model SSP hardware, customers can achieve the same performance in 1U of rack space as they could in 8U of rack space compared against the previous SG-S500-20 – an 8X rack unit performance improvement.
  • Reduced costs – The new hardware lowers the costs for rack space, power, cooling and management.

What are the new hardware models?

  • SSP-S410-10
  • SSP-S410-20
  • SSP-S410-30
  • SSP-S410-40

What is Enterprise Licensing?

With Enterprise Licensing, you buy the appropriate number of SSP-S410 appliances to accommodate your needed throughput and performance. You then purchase the Proxy Enterprise License based on the total capacity need (CPU core count). This is an annual subscription to the software with the flexibility to deploy as you see fit. You can deploy those licenses on-premises on SSP hardware, as a virtual appliance in your hypervisor environment, or in their private cloud environment.

What are the benefits of Enterprise Licensing?

Enterprise licensing is based on CPU core count and provides:

  • Deployment Flexibility – You can transition from on-premises hardware (SSP appliances) to virtualization (ESX/Hyper-V/KVM) or public cloud (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), all with the same license.
  • Improved Scalability – You can easily add capacity within the same license, resize, aggregate or split instances. Add-ons are now included in the Enterprise license – You no longer need to manage separate per-box entitlement and licensing to add on features/services (Intelligence Services Standard, Encrypted Tap, and more)
  • Support for Disaster Recovery/High-Availability plans – The Enterprise License is based on usage. There is no need to pay for licenses that just stay idle or purchase unused capacity in advance of actually using it.
  • Separation of CapEx (capital expense) and OpEx (operational expense) – This provides budget flexibility and can provide you with tax benefits, as the hardware can be reported as a capital expense and the software component (subscription) can be reported as an operational expense.

Recommended next steps

  • Review your current ProxySG appliances and make sure you are taking advantage of the latest capabilities in SGOS. Recent updates are significant, including: New java-less management console and Visual Policy Manager, TLS 1.3 and HTTP2 support, Policy Services Subscription and more in the latest release.
  • Examine your hardware inventory, evaluate your EOL timing and plan for your future upgrade to the new hardware platform or to a virtual or cloud deployment.
  • Contact your Symantec rep or authorized Symantec partner for more details on End of Life of your hardware and Enterprise Licensing.
